Description:
Black or dark brown oily liquid with a specific odor.
Structure:
The birch bark sublimation product is a mixture of resinous substances, phenols and aromatic carbohydrates.
Pharmacological properties:
Birch tar has a strong antiseptic, local irritant, anti-inflammatory, insecticidal, antiparasitic and disinfectant effect, improves blood circulation, stimulates the regeneration of the epidermis of damaged tissues, enhances the keratinization process, dries wounds and accelerates their healing. In small concentrations (3-5%) it activates the growth of granulation, in large concentrations (above 10%) it sharply weakens.
Application:
Outwardly for the treatment of skin diseases in animals: eczema, dermatomycosis (trichophytosis, microsporia), scabies, furunculosis, pyoderma, bedsores, burns, ulcers, frostbite, wound infections, limb wounds, cracked horses’ hooves, cattle hooves, etc.
Inside it is prescribed as an anti-fermentation and disinfectant for horses, small ruminants, pigs, dogs and chickens.
For disinfection of premises, barnyards, animal care items.
Dosage:
Outwardly – applied to the affected skin 1-2 times a day (mainly in the form of ointments and liniment):
with fungal diseases, the course of treatment is up to 3 weeks;
for the treatment of scabies, tar preparations are rubbed into the skin warm (40-50 ° C), the course of treatment is two days in a row with an interval of 7 days, in advanced cases – three days in a row with an interval of 3-4 days;
for FMD lesions – pre-cleaned hooves are treated with pure birch tar or a mixture of tar with fish oil in a ratio of 1: 1;
for other skin diseases, the course of treatment is 5-12 days.
Inside once – in the form of 10% water emulsion, tar in doses on the head:
horses and cattle – 10-25 g;
small cattle and pigs – 2-5 g;
dogs – 0.1-1.0 g;
chickens – 0.05-0.2 g.
For disinfection of premises, stockyards, 5-10% sulfur-tar (alkaline) solutions are used; for horse harness disinfection – pure tar.
Contraindications:
Do not use for eczema in the acute stage, with impaired renal function.
Caveats:
Prolonged use may cause skin irritation.
