Description:
Transparent, thick and viscous, colorless or slightly yellowish liquid with a weak characteristic odor and a peculiar unpleasant taste.

Pharmacological properties:
When ingested, castor oil under the influence of the lipase enzyme in the small intestine is broken down to form recinolic acid, which causes irritation of intestinal receptors and a reflex increase in peristalsis, and also causes a reflex contraction of the uterine muscles. The laxative effect in carnivorous animals occurs after 4-6 hours, in herbivores – after 15-20 hours. When applied externally, castor oil helps to relieve tissue edema, improves trophism of wounds.

Application:
Inside as a laxative for constipation, intestinal obstruction and inflammation, poisoning.

Outwardly prescribed for ulcers, burns, rough skin.

Contraindications:
The use of castor oil is contraindicated in case of poisoning with fat-soluble chemical compounds (phosphorus, benzene, phenol, carbon tetrachloride, etc.), male fern.

Caveats:
With prolonged use of the drug, intestinal atony may develop.
