Domosedan (detomidine) solution, 5 ml
Storage
1 ml of Domosedan contains 10 mg of detomidine hydrochloride as an active substance. In appearance, the drug is a transparent, colorless solution. The drug is produced in the form of a sterile solution for injections, packaged in 5 and 20 ml glass vials, closed with chlorobutanol stoppers, rolled up with aluminum caps and placed in individual cardboard boxes.
Pharmacological properties
Detomidine hydrochloride, which is part of Domosedan, is an agonist of α2-adrenergic receptors. Domosedan has a sedative and analgesic effect. The effect of detomidine is dose-dependent: small doses produce a mild sedative effect without analgesia, while large doses cause a significant sedative and analgesic effect. The drug has a faster effect when administered intravenously, slower – when administered intramuscularly. The drug is quickly absorbed after intramuscular administration. The maximum concentration in blood plasma is reached after 15-30 minutes. Detomidine is rapidly distributed in the body. Binding to blood plasma proteins is 85-90%. Detomidine is oxidized in the liver, a small part is methylated in the kidneys. Most of the drug’s metabolites are excreted in the urine. The half-life is 1-2 hours.
Indication
It is prescribed to obtain a sedative effect and analgesia of horses during surgical operations and various clinical studies.
Application method
Domosedan is administered to horses intramuscularly or intravenously. The degree of sedative action can be adjusted by selecting the dose of the drug. The drug is administered intravenously slowly (1 ml per minute) in the following doses:
A sedative effect is required | Dose | Onset of effect (min*) | Duration of action (min*)
µg/kg | ml/100 kg | in/in | in/m
Light | 10 – 20 | 0.1 – 0.2 | 3 | 5 | 30 – 60 |
Average | 20 – 40 | 0.2 – 0.4 | 2 | 5 | 30 – 60 |
Deep | 40 – 80 | 0.4 – 0.8 | 1 | 5 | 30 – 120 |

It is recommended to use 2 sterile needles: one for filling the syringe from the bottle, the other directly for injection. As soon as the necessary dose of the drug is drawn into the syringe, it should be disconnected from the needle located in the vial. An injection needle is inserted into the animal, and only then the syringe with the drug is attached to it.
