Cestal plus is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic drug, which contains the active ingredients: praziquantel, pyrantela embonate and fenbendazole, effective against tape and round helminths.
Praziquantel is a pyrazinisoquinolone derivative that is rapidly absorbed through the outer shell of tapeworms, resulting in damage and contraction. The consequence of a violation of the penetrating properties of membranes is paralysis of parasites. Praziquantel is rapidly absorbed in the alimentary canal. Its highest concentration in blood plasma is observed 1-2 hours after administration, it is rapidly metabolized and excreted in the form of metabolites in the urine.
Pyrantela embonate, a tetrahydropyrimidine derivative, acts as a cholinergic antagonist, causing spastic paralysis of round helminths by depolarizing neuromuscular blockade. The maximum concentration of pyrantel embonate in blood plasma is observed after 2-4 hours. Pyrantel embonate is excreted from the body with feces and urine within 24 hours.
Fenbendazole belongs to the benzimidazole group; soluble in formic acid. The mechanism of action of fenbendazole is in violation of glucose transport, disorder of microtubular function and a decrease in the activity of fumarate reductase synthesis in the body of helminths; this action causes paralysis and leads to the death of helminths. Inhibition of the synthesis of fumarate reductase leads to a decrease in the level of glycogen in the body of parasites. Fenbendazole inhibits the polymerization of tubulin in microtubulin, as a result of which the intracellular transport of nutrients and metabolic substances (adenosine triphosphoric acid and glucose) is impaired.
