Pharmacological properties
ATC vet classification code Q P 52 A , anti-trematod, anti-nematode and anti-cestod veterinary drugs (QP52АС13, fenbendazole).
Fenbendazole (5-phenyl-thio-2-benzimidazole carbamate) has a wide range of nematocidal and cestodocidal effects, active against adult forms and larvae of alimentary canal and lung nematodes and certain types of trematodes and cestodes. The mechanism of action of the drug consists in the destruction of microtubules in the intestinal cells of helminths and disruption of energy processes, which leads to the death of parasites.
Piperazine adipinate is active against various types of nematodes, especially roundworms. It acts on both sexually mature and immature helminths of both sexes, causing paralysis of the nematode muscles, which are then removed by peristaltic movements of the intestines. Due to the fact that piperazine adipinate does not break the shell of roundworms, there is no danger of absorbing toxic products of their decay.
The combination of fenbendazole and piperazine adipinate due to their synergism increases the effect of the drug against nematodes .
