Pharmacological properties
Pharmacotherapeutic group of the drug: combined anthelmintic drugs.
The combination of milbemycin oxime and praziquantel, which are part of the preparation, provides a wide spectrum of its anthelmintic action on adult cestodes: Dipylidium caninum; Taenia spp., Echinococcus spp., Mesocestoides spp. and nematodes: Ancylostoma caninum, Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Trichuris vulpis, Thelazia callipaeda, Crenosoma vulpis, Angiostrongylus vasorum, and is also active against the larvae of Dirofilaria immitis.
Milbemycin oxime is a macrocyclic lactone obtained as a result of the enzymatic activity of Streptomyces hygroscopicus var. Aureolacrimosus, is active against larvae and imago of nematodes parasitizing in the gastrointestinal tract of dogs, as well as larvae of the nematode Dirofilaria immitis.
The mechanism of action of milbemycin is due to an increase in the permeability of nematode and insect membranes for chlorine ions through glutamate-dependent chloride channels (related to GABA and glycine receptors in vertebrates). This leads to hyperpolarization of the membranes of the cells of the nervous and muscle tissue, peripheral paralysis and death of the parasite.
Praziquantel is an acylated pyrazinisoquinoline derivative that has a pronounced effect against cestodes at all stages of development. Increasing the permeability of the parasite’s cell membranes for calcium ions, it causes membrane depolarization, muscle contraction and destruction of the tegument, which leads to the death of the parasite and promotes its excretion from the animal’s body.
The maximum concentration of milbemycin oxime in the blood plasma of dogs is reached within 2-4 hours, the half-life tj / 2 is approximately 1-4 days, and the bioavailability is about 80%. The compound is excreted from the body mainly unchanged.
The maximum plasma concentration of praziquantel in dogs is reached in 0.5-4 hours. The half-life t1 / 2 is approximately 1.5 hours. The compound undergoes rapid and almost complete biotransformation in the liver to monohydroxylated (also possible to di- and trihydroxylated) derivatives, which, before elimination, are mainly associated with glucuronide and / or sulfate. The level of binding in plasma is about 80%, it is excreted in the urine, up to 90% within 2 days.
In recommended doses, they do not have a sensitizing, embryotoxic and teratogenic effect.
The drug is toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms.
Application procedure
Milpro dog is prescribed to dogs with a therapeutic and prophylactic purpose for nematodes, cestodes and mixed nematodes-cestodes infestations caused by both larval forms and sexually mature cestodes and nematodes of the following types:
- Цестоды: Dipylidium caninum, Taenia spp., Echinococcus spp., Mesocestoides spp.
- Nematodes: Ancylostoma caninum, Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonine, Trichuris vulpis, Crenosoma vulpis, Thelazia callipaeda, Angiostrongylus vasorum (reduces the intensity of infection), Dirofilaria immitis (disease prevention).
Contraindications
Contraindications to the use of the drug Milprodog are hypersensitivity of the animal to the components of the drug and severe dysfunctions of the liver and kidneys.
Milpro dog should not be used in puppies under 2 weeks of age and weighing less than 0.5 kg.
Milpro dog for large dogs must not be used for dogs weighing less than 5 kg.
Emaciated and sick with infectious diseases animals are not subject to deworming.
Dosage
Milpro dog is administered orally, in the morning feeding with a small amount of food or injected forcibly on the root of the tongue after feeding in a minimum therapeutic dose of 0.5 mg of milbemycin oxime and 5 mg of praziquantel per 1 kg of animal weight at the rate of:
Animal weight, kg | Milpro dog for puppies and small dogs (oval beige) | Milpro dog for large dogs (round beige) |
0.5-1 | 1/2 tablet | – |
1-5 | 1 tablet | – |
5-10 | 2 tablets | 1 tablet |
10-25 | – | 1 tablet |
25-50 | – | 2 tablets |
50-75 | – | 3 tablets |
A preliminary fasting diet and the use of laxatives before deworming are not required.
For deworming dogs with infestation caused by Angiostrongylus vasorum, Milpro dog tablets are used for therapeutic purposes four times with an interval of 7 days, for prophylaxis – every 4 weeks at a therapeutic dose.
For deworming dogs with invasion caused by Thelazia callipaeda in cases where a single use is not enough, the drug is used again after 7 days.
In order to prevent dirofilariasis, in regions unfavorable for the disease, the drug is used in the spring-summer-autumn period: before the flight of mosquitoes and mosquitoes (carriers of the pathogen D. immitis) once, then once a month and the last time in the season no earlier than 1 month after the end of the flight of insects. Before deworming, you should consult a veterinarian to exclude the presence of microfilariae in the animal’s blood.
In case of an overdose of the drug, some dogs may experience depression, refusal to feed, drooling, muscle paresis, trembling and / or a wobbly gait. These symptoms disappear spontaneously within 24 hours and do not require the use of drugs.
Deworming of pregnant and lactating bitches, if necessary, is carried out under the supervision of a veterinarian.
When carrying out deworming, the recommended dosage regimen should be adhered to. In case of skipping the next treatment, the use of the drug is resumed in the same dose in the same dosage regimen.
When using Milpro dog in accordance with this instruction, side effects and complications when using the drug, as a rule, are not observed.
Some animals may experience lethargy, ataxia, muscle tremors, vomiting and / or diarrhea. In these cases, the use of the drug is discontinued and the animal is prescribed symptomatic therapy.
Treatment of dogs with a large number of circulating microfilariae can sometimes lead to a hypersensitivity reaction, accompanied by pallor of the mucous membranes, vomiting, trembling, shortness of breath or increased salivation. These reactions are associated with the release of proteins from dead or dying microfilariae and are not a direct toxic effect of the product; therefore, the use of Milprodog is not recommended for dogs with intense microfilariaemia.
Collie, Sheltie or other related breeds are more susceptible to side effects of the drug.
The drug Milpro dog is compatible with selamectin, there is no information on the compatibility of the drug with other macrocyclic lactones.
The drug is not intended for use in productive animals.
