Novocaine solution 0.5% (procaine hydrochloride), 50 ml
Description
Transparent colorless liquid.
Storage
100 ml of the drug contain the active ingredient:
novocaine (procaine hydrochloride) 0.5 g.
Excipients: hydrochloric acid, water for injections.
Pharmacological properties
Novocaine solution 0.5% is a local anesthetic agent with moderate activity and a wide spectrum of therapeutic action. The anesthetic action of novocaine manifests itself quickly, but for a short time, its mechanism is related to the blockade of sodium channels, inhibition of potassium current, reduction of the surface tension of the phospholipid layer of membranes, inhibition of redox processes and generation of nerve impulses. When procaine hydrochloride enters the blood, it reduces the formation of acetylcholine; reduces excitability of peripheral cholinergic systems, cardiac muscle, motor areas of the cerebral cortex; blocks the action of vegetative ganglia; reduces spasms of smooth muscles.
When administered parenterally, the drug is quickly absorbed, hydrolyzed with the formation of two main pharmacologically active metabolites: diethylaminoethanol (moderate vasodilator effect) and paraaminobenzoic acid (a component of the folic acid molecule, antihistaminic effect, activation of detoxification processes, antisulfanilamide effect).
Novocaine is the least toxic local anesthetic for animals.
Application
For the treatment of animals (local, infiltration anesthesia, therapeutic blockade) during external and cavity operations; in obstetrics and gynecology practice (mastitis, metritis, endometritis, litter retention, uterine and vaginal prolapse); ophthalmology (keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis, eye inflammation in horses – suborbital blockade); in respiratory diseases (hyperemia and pulmonary edema, bronchopneumonia); diseases of the organs of the abdominal cavity (gastric ulcer, atony with tympany of the antrum, spastic colic, mechanical obstruction of the intestines; traumatic reticulo-peritonitis); spasms of blood vessels; slowly granulating wounds, ulcers, fistulas, myositis, papillomatosis.
A 0.5% novocaine solution is used to dissolve antibiotics, prolonging their effect.
Dosage
Doses and methods of administration of the drug depend on the purpose of use (possible infiltration of the solution into the tissues, in the place where the nerve passes, intravenously or intraarterially). It is also possible to use the drug as a solvent for dry forms of antibiotics.
Maximum single doses of 0.5% novocaine solution per animal (ml):
400-500 horses;
cattle 300-400;
100 dogs.
Before administration, the solution of the drug is heated to the temperature of the animal’s body.
Administer the drug slowly intravenously.

Contraindication
Hypotension, purulent processes at the injection site.
Side effect
An allergic skin reaction in the form of hives is possible.
Reservation
When using novocaine solution, allergic reactions in the form of idiosyncrasies are possible.
Intravenous injections of the drug in maximum doses cause excitement, and intra-arterial injections – inhibition of the cerebral cortex.
The drug is incompatible with tanids, alkalis, oxidizers, salts of heavy metals, hexamethylenetetramine (urotropin), sulfonamides. Sulfonamides weaken the anesthetic effect of novocaine.
When novocaine is administered intravenously, the muscle-relaxing effect of dityline is enhanced. The simultaneous use of novocaine and novocaineamide leads to an increase in the effect of the latter. Cross-sensitization is also possible.
Release form
Glass bottles closed with rubber stoppers under an aluminum break-in of 10, 50, 100 and 200 ml.
Storage
A dry, dark place inaccessible to children at a temperature of 5 to 25 °C.
The shelf life is 2 years.
