Pharmacological properties
ATCvet QS02, veterinary drugs used in otology (QS02CA06 – Corticosteroids (dexamethasone) and antibacterial drugs in combination).
OTODEF is a combined drug with antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory effects due to the combination of active substances: marbofloxacin, clotrimazole, dexamethasone acetate.
Marbofloxacin is a synthetic, bactericidal antimicrobial substance belonging to the group of fluoroquinolones. It exhibits an antimicrobial effect by inhibiting the activity of the DNA gyrase enzyme, which is an extremely important catalyst for DNA replication in the bacterial cell. Inhibition of DNA gyrase activity leads to functional disorders, blocking of protein biosynthesis in the cell and death of the pathogenic microorganism. The result is a rapid bactericidal effect. Marbofloxacin is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Clotrimazole is a synthetic derivative of imidazole with a pronounced fungicidal effect on dermatophytes (Epidermophytion floccosum, Microsporum spp., Trichophyton spp.), yeast and yeast-like fungi (Candida spp., Cryptococcus neoformans, Torulosis spp., Aspergillus spp., Cladosporium spp., Madurella spp. . and others), as well as on other pathogenic fungi (Malassezia pachydermatis and others). It suppresses the biosynthesis of ergostyrene and changes the lipid composition of the membrane, which leads to the death of the fungal cell.
Dexamethasone acetate is a synthetic glucocorticosteroid with pronounced anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anti-exudative activity, with a rapid onset and short duration of action. Dexamethasone stabilizes cell membranes, reduces the permeability of blood capillaries, exhibits an anti-exudative effect by stabilizing the membranes of lysosomes.
According to the degree of action on the body, Otodef belongs to low-toxic substances (safety class 4), in recommended doses it does not show local irritant and resorptive-toxic effects, it is well tolerated by dogs of different breeds and ages.
Application
Treatment of dogs suffering from acute and chronic otitis externa caused by bacteria and fungi sensitive to the active ingredients of the drug.
Dosage
