Description
Solution for external use in plastic tubes.
Storage
1 ml of the drug contains the active substance:
- selamectin – 60 mg;
- sarolaner – 10 mg.
Excipients: dipropylene glycol monomethyl ether, isonropyl alcohol, butylhydroxytoluene.
Pharmacological properties
ATCvet QP55, endeocides (QP54AA05, selamectin, macrocyclic lactones)
Selamectin is a substance in the group of macrocyclic lactone endocides. The mechanism of action is associated with changes in the activity of chlorine channels of synaptic membranes in the nervous and muscular systems of many ectoparasites. By binding to specific receptors, it increases the permeability of synaptic membranes to chlorine ions, leading to blockade of the electrical activity of parasite nerve and muscle cells and, as a result, their paralysis and death. In mammals, such receptors are located only in the central nervous system. Because selamectin does not have the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, it has a high level of safety and is safe for dogs and cats at recommended doses.
Selamectin has a wide range of systemic nematode, insecticidal and acaricidal action, has larvocidal and ovocidal properties.
The drug is rapidly and completely absorbed from the site of application into the blood. Therapeutic concentrations of selamectin in the blood are maintained for a long time, providing the destruction of parasites and protection against reinvasion for a month.
Sarolaner is an acaricide and insecticide belonging to the isoxazoline group. The main object of action of sarolaner in insects and acarids is the functional blockade of ligand-dependent chloride channels (GABA receptors and glutamate receptors). Sarolaner blocks GABA and glutamate-dependent chloride channels in the central nervous system of insects and acarids. Disruption of these receptors by Sarolaner prevents the absorption of chlorine ions by GABA and glutamate-dependent ion channels, which leads to increased nerve stimulation and death of the target parasite. Sarolaner demonstrates a higher functional ability to block insect / acarid receptors compared to mammalian receptors. Sarolaner does not interact with known insecticidal binding sites of nicotine or other GABAergic insecticides, such as neonicotinoids, fiproles, milbemycins, avermectins and cyclodienes.
After topical application of Stronghold Plus, both selamectin and sarolaner are well absorbed with average bioavailability values of 40.5% and 57.9%, respectively, and are distributed systemically. In cats, selamectin and sarolaner are drugs with low clearance and a long half-life of 12.5 days and 41.5 days after topical application, respectively.
In cats, the main route of excretion of selamectin – in the feces, most of the drug is excreted as the starting compound. Identification of selamectin metabolites in feces has shown that metabolic clearance also promotes its excretion. The main route of excretion of sarolaner is the elimination with bile of the parent compound, taking into account metabolic clearance.
Application
Treatment of tick infestation for 5 weeks against Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes hexagonus, as well as for 4 weeks against Dermacentor reticulatus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus.
Prevention and treatment of otodectosis (Otodectes Cynotis), toxocariasis (Toxocara cati), hookworm (Ancylostoma tubaefortme), infestation of bloodsucking lice (Felicola subrostratus) and fleas (Ctenocephalides spp.), As well as for the prevention of diphtheria.
The drug can be used as part of a therapeutic strategy for the treatment of allergic dermatitis caused by fleas (FAD).
Dosage
The drug is applied to dry skin between the shoulder blades in the following doses:
Cats, body weight, kg | Pipette volume (ml) | Selamectin (mg) | Sarolaner (ml) |
> 2.5 kg | 0.25 | 15 | 2.5 |
> 2.5 – 5.0 kg | 0.5 | 30 | 5 |
> 5.0 – 10.0 kg | one | 60 | 10 |
Extermination of fleas and ticks
Within 24 hours and within 5 weeks after application of the drug, adult fleas and ticks that are on the animal die.
The drug disrupts the ability of fleas to lay viable eggs and destroys larvae that are in the environment. This breaks the breeding cycle of fleas and allows you to control the existing pollution of the environment where the animal is.
To prevent invasion, the drug should be used once a month during the season of flea and tick activity.
To use the drug as part of therapy for flea allergic dermatitis, the drug is used at monthly intervals.
Treatment of toxocariasis and hookworm
You need to use a single dose of the drug. The need and frequency of re-treatment should be agreed with the prescribing veterinarian.
Treatment of otodectosis
The drug is used once. Before treatment, it is recommended to clean the ear canal of exudate and scabs. If necessary, repeat the treatment in a month.
Treatment of pediculosis
The drug is used once.
Prevention of heartworm disease
To prevent heartworm disease, Stronghold Plus is given to animals every month, starting one month before the flight of mosquito / mosquito vectors and ending no earlier than one month after the end of the flight of insects. In the event that the monthly interval between two uses of Stronghold Plus was violated, the drug is applied as soon as possible, which minimizes the possibility of developing adult heartworms. In case of using another drug for the prevention of heartworm disease, the next use of the drug Stronghold Plus is carried out one month after the last use of the previous drug.
Contraindication
Do not use in animals with low body weight, as well as exhausted and sick animals.
Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to active substances or excipients.
Reservation
The drug is intended for external dermal use only.
Stronghold Plus is recommended for cats aged 8 weeks and weighing at least 1.25 kg. Do not apply the product on damp skin.
Animals should not be bathed for 2 hours after application (until completely dry).
In the treatment of otodectosis, the drug should not be applied directly to the ear canal.
If a significant amount of the drug is ingested or licked, temporary gastrointestinal effects such as increased salivation, vomiting, soft stools, or poor appetite may occur. They usually go untreated.
Keep treated animals away from open flames or other sources of ignition for at least 30 minutes or until the coat is completely dry.
Do not smoke, drink or eat while working with the drug.
Keep the drug away from heat and fire.

People with sensitive skin or allergies to this type of veterinary medicine should be treated with caution when using Stronghold Plus.
Use during pregnancy or lactation
The safety of the drug has not been established during pregnancy and lactation, or in animals intended for breeding. However, selamectin is safe to use in breeding, pregnant and lactating cats. The safety of sarolaner has not been evaluated in breeding, pregnant and lactating cats, but laboratory studies with sarolaner in rats and rabbits have not shown a teratogenic effect. Therefore, the use of Stronghold Plus should be based on a benefit-risk assessment by the prescribing veterinarian.
Adverse reactions
Application of Stronghold Plus may cause mild itching at the application site. Mild to moderate alopecia, erythema, and salivation have occasionally been reported.
