Carprofen is an NSAID and belongs to the group of 2-arylpropionic acids. It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effects.
Like most NSAIDs, carprofen is a specific inhibitor of cyclooxygenase in the arachidonic acid cascade. As a result, the synthesis of prostaglandins is digested. Prostaglandins play a significant role in the development of inflammatory reactions and as a mechanism for protecting the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract from ulcers. Cyclooxygenase (COX) has two isoenzymes, COX 1 and COX-2 The COX 1 enzyme is permanently present in the blood and has autoregulatory functions (eg, protecting the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract and protecting the kidneys).
In contrast, COX-2 is not always found in the blood. This enzyme is thought to cause inflammation. Based on this assumption, it is concluded that the degree of inhibition of COX-1 determines the rate of occurrence of gastrointestinal ulcers and the ratio of isoenzymes to each other determines the rate of adverse reactions and / or effectiveness. Carprofen has a COX-2: COX-1 ratio of 1.

These side effects usually occur within the first week of treatment, in most cases they are temporary and disappear after treatment. In very rare cases, they can be serious or fatal. If adverse reactions occur, the product should be discontinued and a veterinarian should be consulted. A temporary increase in ALAT is possible.
In rare cases, liver damage and liver dysfunction can occur.
If you notice any side effects not described, inform your veterinary surgeon.
Special precautions for use in animals:
Use in dogs under 6 weeks of age and in older dogs carries additional risks. If medication cannot be avoided, dose reduction and careful clinical management may be required.
Taking more than the prescribed amount of pills can lead to serious side effects. In this case, you should immediately seek medical attention.
Avoid using the drug on dehydrated dogs with hypovolemia or hypotension due to the greater risk of kidney damage.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can lead to inhibition of phagocytosis and therefore antibacterial treatment should be prescribed in the treatment of inflammatory conditions associated with bacterial infection. Do not use other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or glucocorticoids at the same time and not earlier than within 24 hours. Some nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can bind strongly to plasma proteins and compete with other protein-binding drugs that can cause toxic effects.
Exposure to intense light during treatment can lead to photodermatitis in animals with poor skin pigmentation.
