Tylosin is a macrolide. It has a bacteriostatic effect against gram-positive bacteria, such as Bordetella bronchiseptica, Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, Mycoplasma spp., Chlamydia spp., Spirochetesspp., Rickettsia spp., Staphylococcus spp., And many, including are resistant to penicillins. It also acts against some gram-negative bacteria, such as Campylobacter spp., Pasteurella spp., And against some anaerobes. Among the bacteria that infect pigs, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Bordetellabronchiseptica, Staphylococcus aureus and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae are the most sensitive to tylosin. Once in the bacterial cell, the macrolides reversibly bind to the peptidyltransferase center with the 50s subunit of the bacterial ribosome, thereby blocking protein synthesis,
At minimum concentrations, macrolides have a bacteriostatic effect, at high concentrations have a bactericidal effect.
