Pharmacological properties
ATCvet QP52A, anti-trematode, anti-nematode and anti-cestode veterinary drugs, (ATCvet QP52AE01, levamisole).
The active ingredient of the drug is levamisole hydrochloride – a substance of the imidazothiazole group, is a biologically active derivative of tetramisole.
Levamisole blocks fumarate reductase, inhibits the formation of ATP and acts on the neuromuscular system of the parasite (stimulates the parasympathetic and sympathetic ganglia), inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, thereby stimulating continuous muscle contraction, subsequent relaxation and irreversible paralysis of the parasite.
The drug is administered to animals without a starvation diet and the use of laxatives.
After parenteral administration, levamisole is rapidly absorbed and reaches its maximum concentration in tissues within 30-50 minutes after administration.
The therapeutic level of levamisole remains in the body for 6-9 hours.
