Description

RELAX 10 mg/ml (propofol) Sterile Solution for dogs and cats, 100 ml

Structure

1 ml of the preparation contains active ingredient:

propofol – 10.0 mg.

Excipients: macrogol 15 hydroxystearate, sodium metabisulfite, Trilon B, benzyl alcohol, water for injection.

Pharmacological properties

Relax belongs to the group of drugs for non-inhalation anesthesia, an ultra-short-acting sedative. Propofol – the active substance of the Relax drug – is characterized by high lipophilicity and easily penetrates the blood-brain barrier, causes a quick short-term anesthetic effect with minimal manifestations of the stage of excitement. Within 30-60 seconds, drug-induced sleep occurs, the development of which is due to the nonspecific effect of propofol on the ionic tubules of the membranes of the neurons of the central nervous system. The anesthetic effect after a single injection of the drug in the recommended dose is up to 8 minutes. With the support of anesthesia in the usual mode, no significant cumulation of the drug is observed. After intravenous administration, propofol binds to plasma proteins (98%), is metabolized mainly

The half-life in the initial fast phase of distribution of propofol is 1-8 minutes, in the slow phase of distribution – 30-70 minutes, and in the elimination phase from 4 to 23.5 hours.

Propofol is used together with atropine, glycopyrolate, acepromazine, xylazine, ketamine, oxymorphone, halothane and isoflurane. Pharmacological incompatibility is not observed.

Application

Relax is used in dogs and cats for general short-term anesthesia (especially when a short period of recovery of the animal from anesthesia is required), for induction of anesthesia and maintenance of the main anesthesia. The drug can be used for induction of anesthesia for caesarean section in bitches.

Relaxation is administered to animals in the following cases: for short-term anesthesia with short-term (up to 5 minutes) surgical and diagnostic procedures – once, for induction of anesthesia and support of the main anesthesia by additional injections, for induction of anesthesia with inhalation anesthesia.

Dosage

To achieve short-term anesthesia, the Relax drug is administered intravenously in a dose calculated for the animal’s body weight, once for 10-60 seconds until an anesthetic effect is obtained.

The recommended doses, per animal of the corresponding weight, are presented in Table 1. In practice, to achieve adequate anesthesia, the dose should be adjusted based on the animal’s response to the drug administration.

When premedication is used, the dose of Relax is reduced (table 1).

Table 1. Dosage of the drug Relax

Animal species Type of anesthesia Dose of the drug Relax per kg of body weight of the animal
Dogs Short-term general anesthesia:
without premedication 0.65 ml (6.5 mg propofol)
with premedication 0.4 ml (4 mg propofol)
Cats Short-term general anesthesia:
without premedication 0.8 ml (8 mg propofol)
with premedication 0.6 ml (6 mg propofol)

For premedication, the following are usually used: acepromazine, oxymorphone, xylazine, according to the dosage indicated in Table 2. Other sedatives, hypnotics, opiates and / or α-2-agonists can be used as premedication drugs.

Table 2. Dosage of drugs for premedication

Preparation for premedication Dose (mg / kg) * Method of administration
Acepromazine 0.060 Intramuscularly, subcutaneously, intravenously
Oxymorphone 0.090 Intramuscularly, subcutaneously, intravenously
Xylazine 0.33 Intramuscularly, subcutaneously

10 kg 22.046 lb 22 lb 0.740 oz

* Doses of these drugs are lower than normalized by the leaflets (instructions) for them for use as monopreparations.

General anesthesia for up to 30 minutes is provided by induction of anesthesia with RELAX and further bolus administration of additional doses of the drug, in a total amount of up to 2.4 ml / kg of body weight (24 mg / kg of propofol).

Before inhalation anesthesia, Relax drug for induction anesthesia is used in the same doses as for short-term anesthesia, and the primary concentration of anesthetic gas when using Relax drug should be higher than when using barbiturates as induction anesthesia.

Overdose (symptoms, emergency measures, antidotes)

An overdose of the drug can cause short-term apnea, a decrease in blood pressure, and bradycardia. In these cases, they resort to artificial ventilation, prescribe means of symptomatic and pathogenetic therapy.

Contraindications

Increased individual sensitivity of the animal to the components of the drug (including a history), severe decompensated diseases of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. RELAX should not be used for anesthesia in pregnant females (if preservation of the offspring is planned). The drug can be used for induction of anesthesia during caesarean section in bitches.

It is necessary to use the drug with caution in emaciated animals, with hypovolemia, kidney, liver and lung diseases.

Do not apply to productive animals!

Side effect

When used as recommended in the package leaflet, it is generally well tolerated by animals. The administration of the drug, like other agents for general anesthesia, can cause short-term apnea in the animal, a decrease in blood pressure, and bradycardia. In these cases, they resort to artificial ventilation, prescribe means of symptomatic and pathogenetic therapy.

Caveats

Do not freeze!

Do not mix the drug with other drugs in the same syringe!

The drug is compatible with drugs that are used for premedication, with muscle relaxants, inhalation anesthetics and analgesics; undesirable pharmacodynamic interactions are not indicated.
