Pharmacological properties

ATC vet classification code QJ01 – antibacterial veterinary drugs for systemic use. QJ01MA93 – Marbofloxacin.

Marbofloxacin is a synthetic chemotherapeutic agent, belongs to the group of fluoroquinolones. The drug inhibits the activity of the enzyme DNA gyrase, as a result of which DNA replication and the synthesis of bacterial cellular protein are disrupted. Marbofloxacin has a bactericidal effect against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms (Staphylococcus spp., Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter cloacae, Serratia marcescens, Morganella morganii, Proteus spp., Klebsiella spp., Proteus spp., Klebsiella spp. , Moraxella spp., Pseudomonas spp.), And also against mycoplasmas (Mycoplasma bovis, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae). Marbofloxacin is not active against anaerobes, fungi, or yeast.

After oral administration to dogs at the recommended dose of 2 mg / kg, marbofloxacin is rapidly absorbed and reaches a maximum plasma concentration of 1.5 μg / ml within 2:00. Bioavailability is close to 100%. Marbofloxacin weakly binds to plasma proteins (less than 10%), is well distributed throughout the body and in most tissues (liver, kidneys, skin, lungs, bladder, gastrointestinal tract), reaches a higher concentration than in plasma. Marbofloxacin is excreted slowly (t½ß = 14 hours in dogs), mainly in active form in urine (2/3) and feces (1/3).

Application

Treatment of dogs and cats with diseases of the urinary tract and respiratory tract, skin and soft tissues (pyoderma of skin folds, impetigo, folliculitis, furunculosis, bacterial cellulitis) caused by microorganisms sensitive to marbofloxacin.

Indications

Skin and soft tissue infections. Caused by Staphylococcus spp. (S. aureus and S. intermedius), E. coli, Pasteurella multocida and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

  • Dogs: Skin pyoderma, impetigo, folliculitis, furunculosis, bacterial cellulitis. Duration of treatment is at least 5 days and up to 40 days.
  • Cats: Wounds, abscesses, phlegmon. Duration of treatment is 3-5 days.

Respiratory tract infections. Caused by Pasteurella multocida, Enterobacteriaceae (E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae), staphylococcus spp. (S. aureus, S. intermedius), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bordetella bronchiseptica and Streptococcus spp.

  • Dogs: Duration of treatment is at least 7 days and up to 21 days.
  • Cats: Upper respiratory tract infections. Duration of treatment 5 days

Urinary tract infections. Caused by Staphylococcus spp. (S. aureus and S. intermedius), Streptococcus spp, Enterobacteriaceae (E. coli, Proteus spp., Klebsiella spp., Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter cloacae) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

  • Dogs: Associated, and not associated with prostatitis or epididymitis. Duration of treatment is at least 10 days and up to 28 days.

Dosage

Orally. The recommended dose is 2 mg of marbofloxacin per 1 kg of body weight per day. To correctly determine the dose, it is necessary to accurately determine the body weight of the animal (as far as possible) in order to avoid an insufficient dose.

The course of treatment is:

  • in the treatment of diseases of the skin and soft tissues – 5-40 days, depending on the course of the disease;
  • in the treatment of diseases of the urinary tract organs – 10-28 days, depending on the course of the disease;
  • in the treatment of respiratory diseases – 7-21 days, depending on the course of the disease.

Contraindications

Do not administer to animals with hypersensitivity to marbofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones, or to any excipient of the drug, small and medium-sized dogs in the first 12 months of life.

Do not use for diseases caused by fungi or yeast.

Warning

Side effect:

Sometimes minor side effects may occur, namely, skin reactions, vomiting, liquid feces, thirst, short-term increased activity. After stopping treatment, these symptoms spontaneously disappear and do not require interruption of the course of therapy.

Special precautions for use:

Use with caution in young animals; high doses of some fluoroquinolones may have epileptogenic potential. It is recommended to use fluoroquinolones only taking into account the results of the microorganism susceptibility test.

The use of the drug in violation of the instructions given in this brief description of the drug may lead to an increase in the number of bacteria resistant to fluoroquinolones.

Use during pregnancy, lactation:

In studies on laboratory animals (rats, rabbits), no evidence of teratogenic, embryotoxic, or toxic effects of marbofloxacin on the maternal body was obtained when used in therapeutic doses.

Interaction with other means, or other forms of interaction:

It is known that fluoroquinolones interact with metal cations (aluminum, calcium, magnesium, iron) when taken orally. In such cases, the bioavailability of marbofloxacin may decrease. The clearance of theophylline can be significantly reduced when used concomitantly with marbofloxacin. It is not recommended to use it simultaneously with tetracyclines and macrolides.

Storage

A dry, dark place out of the reach of children at a temperature of 8 ° C to 25 ° C
