Glauber’s salt, 100 g
Description:
White powder is bitter-salty to taste, soluble in 3 parts cold water, insoluble in alcohol.
Pharmacological properties:
When used internally, sodium sulfate causes a laxative effect in animals. Laxative effect is based on the fact that the drug, entering the gastrointestinal tract, is poorly absorbed, but absorbs large amounts of fluid. Fluid and sodium sulfate irritate the nerve endings in the intestine: increased peristalsis, accelerates the promotion of contents, increases the secretion of digestive glands and mucus. In the large intestine, irritation of the mucous membrane reflexively causes an act of defecation.
Therapeutic interest is the action of hypertonic solutions of sodium sulfate. 5-10% solutions remove water from the tissues, weaken the absorption of toxic products, facilitate the separation of necrotic tissues, increase the secretion of pus, and thus improve wound cleansing. Sodium sulfate is poorly absorbed from the mucous membranes, irritates them moderately.
Application:
To improve digestion; as a laxative for intestinal spasms, overfeeding, to remove toxins, poisons and foreign bodies from the intestine, to dehydrate the body, to distract from inflammation and the like. Hypertonic solutions of sodium sulfate (5-10%) are used in the treatment of purulent-necrotic wounds.
