Description

Glauber’s salt, 400 g
Description:
White powder, bitter-salty in taste, soluble in 3 parts of cold water, insoluble in alcohol.

Pharmacological properties:
When used internally, sodium sulfate has a laxative effect in animals. The laxative effect is based on the fact that the drug, entering the gastrointestinal tract, is poorly absorbed, but absorbs a large amount of liquid. Liquid and sodium sulfate irritate the nerve endings of the intestine: increased peristalsis, accelerated movement of contents, increased secretion of the digestive glands and the formation of mucus. In the large intestine, irritation of the mucous membrane reflexively causes an act of defecation.

The therapeutic interest is the action of hypertonic sodium sulfate solutions. 5-10% solutions take water away from tissues, weaken the absorption of toxic products, facilitate the separation of necrotic tissues, increase the secretion of pus, and therefore improve wound cleansing. Sodium sulfate is poorly absorbed from the mucous membranes, irritating them moderately.

Application:
To improve digestion; as a laxative for spasms of the intestine, with overflowing, for removing toxins, poisons and foreign bodies from the intestines, dehydration of the body, for a distracting effect in inflammation, and the like. Hypertonic sodium sulfate solutions (5-10%) are used in the treatment of purulent-necrotic wounds.
