Description

MILBEMAX (praziquantel, milbemycinoxime) ANTIHELMENTIC FOR DOGS OVER 5 KG

Milbemax for dogs is a combined anthelmintic drug that acts on both nematodes and cestodicide. Milbemycin oxime in the composition of the drug is active against larvae and imago of nematodes, which parasitize in the gastrointestinal tract of dogs. Under its action, the permeability of cell membranes for chlorine ions increases, which ultimately leads to paralysis and death of the parasite.

Praziquantel causes membrane depolarization, destruction of tegument and muscle contraction, which leads to the death of the parasite. The action of the drug begins within 2 to 4 hours after taking it. It is excreted mainly in the urine within two days. According to the degree of impact on the body, Milbemax is classified as a moderately hazardous substance.

In therapeutic and prophylactic doses, they do not have a sensitizing, teratogenic and embryotoxic effect, however, they are toxic to fish.

INDICATIONS

Milbemax is prescribed for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes for nematodes, cestodes and mixed nematodes-cestodes infestations caused by helminths of the following types: cestodes – Dipylidium caninum, Taenia spp., Echinocoaus multilocularis, Mesocestoides spp. ; nematodes – Ancylostoma caninum, Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Trichuris vulpis, Renosoma vulpis (reduces the intensity of infection), Angiostrongylus vasorum (reduces the intensity of infection), Dirofilaria immitis (for prophylactic purposes).

Contraindications

A contraindication to the use of the drug is the increased individual sensitivity of the dog to its components, as well as severe liver and kidney dysfunctions. Also, Milbemax should not be given to animals that are malnourished and sick with infectious diseases, to puppies under two weeks of age and weighing less than 0.5 kg.

Adult tablets are only for use in dogs weighing over 5 kg. Due to the increased sensitivity of dogs of certain breeds to macrocyclic lactones, the drug is not recommended for bobtail, collie and sheltie puppies. Pregnant and lactating bitches are given Milbemax under the supervision of a veterinarian.

MODE OF APPLICATION

Instructions for use of milbemax for dogs and dosage

Milbemax tablets are given to the dog once during feeding. After feeding, they are injected forcibly onto the root of the tongue or, in crushed form, are mixed into a small amount of feed. The dose is calculated based on the dog’s body weight. For 1 kg of weight, there should be 5 mg of praziquantel and 0.5 mg of milbemycin oxime.

So, puppies weighing from 0.5 to 1 kg are given half a puppy’s pill, babies weighing from 1 to 5 kg – one tablet, and from 5 to 10 kg – 2 tablets. Adult dogs weighing 5 to 25 kg are given one tablet. Large dogs (25-50 kg) are given two tablets, and giants (50-75 kg) are given three tablets. Before deworming with this drug, the use of laxatives and a preliminary fasting diet is not required.

To rid the dog of the Angiostrongylus vasorum parasites, Milbemax tablets in the same dose are used four times at weekly intervals. The drug is also used to prevent dirofilariasis in regions unsuccessful in terms of the disease, before the beginning of summer, mosquitoes and mosquitoes once, and then once a month until the end of the season.

When using the drug according to the instructions, side effects and complications are not observed. With a significant overdose, a dog may experience:

  • salivation,
  • depressed state,
  • muscle paresis,
  • trembling or uneven gait.

Within a day, these symptoms disappear without the use of drugs. Milbemax should not be used in conjunction with other macrocyclic lactones.

DOSES AND METHOD OF APPLICATION

Milbemax tablets for dogs are used once during feeding in a crushed form with a small amount of food or injected forcibly onto the root of the tongue after feeding in a minimum therapeutic dose of 0.5 mg of milbemycin oxime + 5 mg of praziquantel per 1 kg of animal weight, based on:

Animal weight Milbemax tablets for medium and large dogs
0.5-1 kg
1-5 kg
5-10 kg 1 tablet
10-25 kg 1 tablet
25-50 kg 2 tablets
50-75 kg 3 tablets

A preliminary fasting diet and the use of laxatives before deworming are not required.

For deworming dogs with infestation caused by Angiostrongylus vasorum , Milbemax tablets are used in the same dose four times with an interval of 7 days.

In order to prevent dirofilariasis in regions unfavorable for the disease, the drug is used in the spring-summer-autumn period: before the start of flight of mosquitoes
and mosquitoes (carriers of the pathogen D. immitis ) once, then once a month and the last time in the season no earlier than 1 month after the end of the flight of insects. Before deworming, you should consult a veterinarian to exclude the presence of microfilariae in the animal’s blood.

With a significant overdose, some dogs may experience depression, drooling, muscle paresis, trembling and / or uneven gait. These symptoms disappear spontaneously within 24 hours and do not require the use of drugs.
