Pharmacological properties
ATCvet classification code: QP54 – endectocides; QP54AB51 – milbemycin oxime, combinations.
A combined anthelmintic drug with a broad spectrum of activity against cestodes – Dipylidium caninum, Taenia spp., Echinococcus spp., nematodes – Ancylostoma tubaeforme, Toxocara canis, Dirofilaria immitis.
Milbemycin oxime is a macrocyclic lactone obtained by fermentation of Streptomyces hygroscopicus, type Aureolacrimosus. It is active against larvae and adults of nematodes that parasitize the gastrointestinal tract, larvae of the nematode Dirofilaria immitis (microheartworm). The mechanism of action is due to an increase in the permeability of cell membranes for chloride ions (CI), which leads to polarization of the membranes of nerve and muscle cells, paralysis and death of the parasites.
Praziquantel is an acetylated pyrazine isoquinoline derivative. Active against cestodes and trematodes. Increases the permeability of parasite cell membranes to calcium ions (Ca) and causes membrane depolarization, muscle contraction, and destruction of the tegument, which leads to the death of parasites and their excretion from the animal body.
After oral administration, the maximum concentration of milbemycin oxime in the blood plasma is reached after 2 hours. It is excreted from the body mainly unchanged, the half-life is approximately 13±9 hours.
After oral administration with feed, the maximum concentration of praziquantel in the blood plasma is reached after 1 hour. It is excreted from the body mainly as inactive metabolites in the urine, the half-life is about 3 hours.
