Antihelm VS (pyrantela pamoate, praziquantel) suspension, 10 ml
Structure
1 ml of the drug contains active ingredients:
- pyrantela pamoate – 50 mg
- praziquantel 10 mg
Pharmacological properties
ATCvet QP52, veterinary anthelmintic drugs
“Antigelm-VS” is a combined preparation containing pyrantel pamoate and praziquantel. The action of the drug is due to the action of the above components, which provide a wide spectrum of anthelmintic action on all phases of development of round and tapeworms parasitizing in dogs and cats.
Pyrantela pamoate (a group of tetrahydropyrimidines) is active against nematodes (round helminths), affects their cholinergic receptors, which leads to irreversible spastic paralysis of parasites. Pirantela pamoate is almost not absorbed from the intestines and due to this, its anthelmintic effect is prolonged. It is excreted from the body mainly unchanged (93%) with feces.
Praziquantel is a synthetic compound derived from quinoline. It is active against cestodes (tapeworms), increases the permeability of membranes for calcium ions, causes an increase in muscle activity, which is changed by muscle contraction and spastic paralysis, and causes destruction of the outer cover of adult cestodes. Both in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that praziquantel causes severe damage to the parasite’s membrane, leading to spasm and paralysis. There is an almost instantaneous tonic muscle spasm of the parasite and rapid vacuolization of the syncytial membrane. This rapid cramp is caused by changes in bivalent cationic fluxes, in particular calcium.
Praziquantel is well absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and reaches its maximum plasma concentration after 1-3 hours. Bioavailability is about 80%. It is distributed in the organs and tissues of the animal and binds to blood proteins. It is excreted from the body in the urine and in small quantities in the feces.
The drug is highly effective against Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati, Toxascaris leonina, Uncinaria spp., Trichuris vulpis, Ancylostoma spp., Echinococcus granulosus, Alveococus multilocularis, Mesocestoides lineatus, Dipylidium caninum.
In recommended doses, it does not have a sensitizing, embryotoxic and teratogenic effect.
