SHOTAPEN injectable antibacterial solution
Indications for use
SHOTAPEN is used for the treatment of acute and chronic diseases of the bacterial etiology of the respiratory system, the genitourinary system, the musculoskeletal system, the gastrointestinal tract, as well as mastitis, operating rooms, wound and postpartum infections in cattle and small ruminants, pigs, sports horses, cats and dogs caused by microorganisms sensitive to benzylpenicillin and dihydrostreptomycin.
Composition and form of release
CHOTAPEN is a complex antibacterial preparation, as active ingredients in 100 ml contains:
10 g of procaine-benzylpenicillin ,
10 g benzathine benzylpenicillin
16.4 million IU of dihydrostreptomycin sulfate ,
and as auxiliary substances : povidone – 1 g, sodium citrate 1.2 g, disodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid – 0.05 g, procaine hydrochloride – 0.5 g, formaldehyde sodium sulfoxylate – 0.3 g, sodium methyl hydroxybenzoate – 0.09 g, sodium propyl hydroxybenzoate – 0.01 g, polyoxyl – 0.6 g, carbamide – 0.2 g and water for injection.
In appearance, the drug is a white to yellow-white, odorless suspension.
The drug is produced packaged in 50, 100 and 250 ml in glass or polymer bottles of appropriate capacity.
Pharmacological properties
Benzylpenicillins in the form of procaine-benzylpenicillin and benzathine-benzylpenicillin, which are part of SHOTAPEN, belong to the group of narrow-spectrum penicillins, which have a bactericidal effect, mainly on gram-positive bacteria (Clostridium spp., Corynebacterium spp., Erysipe. , Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp.). Their mechanism of action is based on inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis, which leads to the cessation of bacterial growth, and enzymes that hydrolyze peptidoglycan are activated, which weakens the covalent bonds of the cell wall. Growing cells stop dividing, enlarge, swell and disintegrate with the formation of small particles. The peculiarities of penicillins are slow absorption and prolonged action when administered intramuscularly.
Dihydrostreptomycin sulfate is an antibiotic from the aminoglycoside group. Possesses a wide spectrum of antimicrobial action. It has a bactericidal effect on most gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Pasteurella spp., Salmonella spp., Brucella spp., Haemophilus spp., Campylobacter spp. And others). The antibacterial effect is based on the binding of the streptomycin molecule to the ribosome subunits of the microbial cell, which disrupts the reading of information in the protein synthesis system and leads to the inclusion of erroneous amino acids in the growing polypeptide chain. When administered intramuscularly, streptomycin is rapidly absorbed and slightly binds to serum proteins.
Possessing a synergistic effect, the components of the drug exhibit a mutually reinforcing effect, due to which the spectrum of activity increases, and the resistance of bacteria develops more slowly. After a single injection, the therapeutic concentration of the drug in the blood is detected after 2 hours and lasts up to 72 hours.
The drug is excreted from the body mainly with urine, in lactating animals – partly with milk. Cumulation does not occur with normal renal excretory function.
According to the degree of impact on the body, SHOTAPEN belongs to moderately hazardous substances (hazard class 3 according to GOST 12.1.007-76).
Dosage regimen
The drug is administered once subcutaneously or intramuscularly in the following dosages:
• cattle and small ruminants, pigs, sports horses : 1-2 ml per 20 kg of animal weight;
• cats, dogs: 1-2 ml per 25 kg of animal weight.
If necessary, it is possible to re-administer the drug after 72 hours.
If the volume of one injection exceeds 20 ml for cattle and horses, 10 ml for pigs, and 5 ml for small ruminants and calves, then the drug is administered by several injections and into different muscles.
For pregnant females, the drug should be used with caution, at the discretion of the veterinarian. It is recommended to shake the bottle well before use.
Contraindications
Individual hypersensitivity to drug components, liver and kidney disease.
The drug is prohibited for use in rabbits and small rodents. The drug should not be used in conjunction with other antibiotics with oto- and nephrotoxic effects (neomycin, kanamycin, monomycin, gentamicin, etc.). It is also not recommended to use it simultaneously with antibiotics from the group of macrolides, tetracyclines, polymyxins and lincosamides.
