Pharmacological properties
ATCvet QP51, antiprotozoal veterinary drugs.
Ronidazole (a group of nitroimidazole compounds) acts on protozoa, trichomonas and anaerobic bacteria. The connection of the reaction products of ronidazole with the DNA of the simplest cells or bacteria leads to its death. The formation of strong compounds significantly increases the acidic intracellular pH level, which, among other things, confirms the selective action of 5-nitromidazole derivatives against anaerobic bacteria and some protozoa. In addition, as a result of the reaction of ronidazole, products are created, which are intracellular donors of free aerobic radicals, which additionally damage intracellular molecules other than DNA. This increases cellular destruction and leads to the fastest death of protozoa or bacteria.
After oral administration, ronidazole is almost completely quickly absorbed from the digestive tract and reaches the maximum concentration in the blood plasma after 12-14 hours. Its bioavailability is more than 90%. The plasma half-life of ronidazole after oral administration in most animals is approximately 11 hours, blocking its reproduction by inhibiting DNA synthesis.
The drug in the recommended doses has no sensitizing, embryotoxic and teratogenic effects.
