Doxyvet (doxycycline) 50 mg tablets for Dogs and Cats, 20 tablets (10tab*2pcs) (DOXY, DOXYDOG)

Description

Tablets of round shape, with a biconvex surface and a line, covered with a film cover of yellow color.

Storage

1 tablet (160 mg) contains the active ingredient:

  • doxycycline (in the form of doxycycline hyclate) – 50 mg.

Excipients: microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, croscarmellose sodium; film coating.

Pharmacological properties

ATCvet classifier: QJ01 – antibacterial veterinary drugs for systemic use. QJ01AA02 – Doxycycline.

Doxycycline is a semi-synthetic antibiotic of the tetracycline group of the second generation, active against gram-positive (Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Corynebacterium spp., Clostridium spp., Bacillus anthracis, Erysipelothrix spp., Listeria spp., Enterococcus spp.) and gram-negative (Actinomyces spp. ., Fusobacterium spp., Pseudomonas spp., Pasteurella spp., Eikenella spp., Enterobacteria spp., Moraxella spp., Brucella spp., Bartonella spp., Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, Citrobacter, Serratia, Bacteroides tectum, Salmonella) microorganisms : as well as mycoplasma (for example, Mycoplasma haemofelis), spirochetes, chlamydia and rickettsia. Auxiliary means for the treatment of dogs with heartworm disease, as it eliminates symbiosis with Wolbachia.

The mechanism of bacteriostatic action of doxycycline is associated with inhibition of enzymes that catalyze binding of aminoacetyl-RNA to ribosomal acceptors. This, in turn, leads to the blocking of the interaction of the aminoacyl transport RNA with the 30S-subunit of the ribosomal membrane and disruption of the protein synthesis of the microbial cell.

After oral administration, doxycycline is easily absorbed in the digestive tract, the maximum concentration in the plasma is reached after 3 hours, remaining at a therapeutic level for 24 hours. It binds to blood proteins by 80-90%. Easily penetrates into most organs and tissues. It is rapidly distributed in body fluids, including bile, paranasal sinus secretions, pleural effusion, synovial and ascitic fluids. It is very soluble in lipids, penetrates into the prostatic fluid and bronchial secretions. Metabolized in the liver with the formation of inactive metabolites, excreted from the body mainly with feces (about 60%) and urine (about 40%). It does not affect the function of the kidneys, so it is recommended for animals with renal failure, when other tetracyclines are contraindicated. The half-life of the drug is 12-22 hours.

Application

Treatment of dogs and cats with transmissible diseases: as an additional treatment of heartworm disease to eliminate Wolbachia, which contribute to the embryogenesis of filarials, bartonellosis, borreliosis (Lyme disease), ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis (granulocytic ehrlichiosis and infectious cyclic thrombocytopenia), as well as in diseases of the respiratory system ( rhinitis, tonsillitis, bronchopneumonia); genitourinary system (cystitis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis, endometritis); skin (purulent dermatitis) caused by microorganisms sensitive to doxycycline.

Dosage

The drug is applied to animals individually in a mixture with feed or is applied orally to the root of the tongue once a day in a dose of 10 mg of doxycycline hyclate per 1 kg of the animal’s body weight. The course of treatment for the acute course of the disease is 5 days, for chronic – 10-14 days.

As prescribed by a veterinarian, the dosage can be doubled (twice a day), and the duration of use of the drug, in the case of transmissible and other diseases, can be increased to 2 months or more.

Duration of use in case of transmissible diseases*

No. z/p The name of the disease Term
1 Dirofilariasis – to eliminate gram-negative bacteria of the genus Wolbachia, which are obligate endosymbionts for both Dirofilaria immitis and D. repens 4 weeks
2 Borreliosis (Lyme disease) – Bartonella henselae 1 month or more
3 Ehrlichiosis – Ehrlichia canis 4 weeks
4 Anaplasmosis – Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Anaplasma platys 3-4 weeks
5 Bartonellosis – Bartonella henselae, Bartonella vinsonii and others 2-A weeks

* Control of transmissible diseases in dogs and cats ESCCAP recommendations 5 third edition 2019

You should avoid skipping the next dose of the drug, as this can lead to a decrease in therapeutic effectiveness. In case of missing one dose, the use of the drug is resumed in the same dose and according to the same scheme.

Contraindication

Increased sensitivity of the animal to the components of the drug and antibiotics of the tetracycline group, severe liver and/or kidney function disorders.

Do not use in animals during pregnancy and lactation, as well as in puppies and kittens during the period of development of teeth (can cause discoloration, but the risk is lower than after using other tetracyclines).

Do not use in exhausted animals and animals with esophagitis and dysphagia.

Do not use simultaneously with penicillins, cephalosporins, quinolones, erythromycin, sulfonamides, chloramphenicol, and chlorpromazine, as well as with drugs containing Mg 2+ , Fe 3+ , Al 3+ , Ca 2+ cations , as the latter bind with doxycycline and prevent its absorption.

Side effect

In the case of using a veterinary medicinal product according to the leaflet, side effects and complications in animals usually do not occur. In case of increased individual sensitivity to tetracycline and the occurrence of allergic reactions, the use of the drug is stopped and the animal is prescribed antihistamines and means of symptomatic therapy. During tetracycline therapy and exposure to ultraviolet radiation, animals may develop photodermatitis. Manifestation of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea is possible. Since the tablet is covered with a film, the development of esophagitis and esophageal ulcers is unlikely. In case of violation of the integrity of the film shell of the drug, it should be given with food or together with water in a syringe, which will reduce the risk of pathologies.

Special precautions for use

If the animal receives other drugs, then before starting the use of DOXIVET film-coated tablets of 50 mg (mg), a specialist in veterinary medicine should be informed about this. Before/during the use of the drug, it is necessary to conduct a test for the sensitivity of pathogenic microorganisms to doxycycline.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

Do not use in animals during pregnancy and lactation. As an exception, the drug can be used only if it is vitally necessary under the supervision of a veterinary medicine doctor, since in the case of systemic absorption, the drug can cause a violation of bone tissue development of fetuses and newborns.

Interaction with other means or other forms of interaction

Do not use simultaneously with penicillins, cephalosporins, quinolones, erythromycin, sulfonamides, chloramphenicol, and chlorpromazine, as well as with drugs containing Mg 2+ , Fe 3+ , Al 3+ , Ca 2+ cations , as the latter bind with doxycycline and prevent its absorption. It is recommended to avoid the simultaneous use of the drug with antacids, oxidants and kaolin.

Barbiturates and phenytoin can increase the metabolism of doxycycline and reduce its level in blood plasma.
