Pharmacological properties

Megestrol acetate is a synthetic progestogen that acts on the hypothalamic-pituitary system of the animal and blocks the secretion of gonadotropic hormones (follicle-stimulating and luteinizing). With a lack of these hormones in the blood, the maturation of follicles in the ovaries of females is delayed, and in males, testosterone synthesis is blocked, as a result of which estrus and sexual desire in animals cease. In dogs and cats, the drug reduces sexual activity and the behavior associated with it.

The mechanism of action of megestrol acetate has two main directions of influence on the body: antigonadotropic activity is manifested in the suppression of the secretion of gonadotropic hormones and the delay of ovulation, which is clinically a consequence of the delay of estrus; progestogenic action consists in a direct effect on the endometrium of the uterus, which activates the secretory phase, inhibits the implantation of the embryo, enhancing the contraceptive properties of the drug.

Application

Orally for dogs and cats to prevent or stop estrus in cats and bitches, prevent unwanted pregnancy in cats and bitches, and to suppress sexual desire in cats and dogs.

Dosage

Orally with food or forcefully directly onto the root of the tongue

– to prevent estrus – 1 tablet for 10-14 days. After discontinuation of the drug, estrus occurs 14 days later;

– to stop estrus – 1 tablet daily for 3-5 days (from the moment signs of sexual arousal appear);

– as a contraceptive – 3 tablets during the day after mating;

Contraindication

Do not use the drug in cases of diseases of the genitourinary system, tumors, in sexually immature, pregnant and lactating animals.
